Program:  Research on inclusion, well-being and sustainability in education

Introduction

The SPEF doctoral program is deeply rooted in the field of pedagogy and draws on the rich legacy of the Paduan school of pedagogy, adapting its curriculum to the major challenges of our time. The SPEF Doctoral Program is committed to identifying high-quality programs in higher education and is committed to developing epistemologically grounded theoretical models and appropriate methodologies for training in research in education and pedagogy. To this end, it draws on the contributions of all the specialized disciplines within the field of pedagogy, seeking to integrate them into cross-disciplinary programs that address the major educational and training challenges of our time, while also embracing contributions from other disciplines within the educational sciences (with particular reference to sociology, psychology, anthropology, etc.). The SPEF doctoral training project offers two curricula: one (Pedagogical Sciences) that covers the entire area of pedagogical sciences and ranges across all SSDs, taking into account both specific research paths and more transversal paths and a second, more specific curriculum (Research on inclusion, Well-being and Sustainability in Education), which focuses in particular on the themes of inclusion, well-being and sustainability, taking into account the broad international debate and – for this reason – is offered in the vehicular language.

The Curriculum in detail

The curriculum in Research on Inclusion, Well-Being, and Sustainability in Education, taught in English, is divided into the same seven training modules, each of which includes “credited” courses and in-depth seminars/workshops. The program will also specify the timeframe for each of the training modules and whether individual courses and seminars are mandatory. In addition to the seven training modules mentioned above, there are also some cross-curricular training activities and the “free credits” that PhD students can access, choosing them, for example, from courses offered for PhDs at the university level.

MODULE A – Foundations of pedagogical and educational research (Coordinators: Andrea Porcarelli e Sara Serbati)

MODULO C – Methodologies, strategies and tools for educational research (Responsabile: Juliana Elisa Raffaghelli)

General Information

This module supports PhD students in grasping and realizing the need of epistemological, methodological and axiological alignment while doing educational research. This implies there is not “best evidence” or methods, but methods that each researcher decides to use according to the socio-cultural contexts into which she/he intervenes; and also, according to her/his expertise. The appropriate liaison of such elements is also part of an ethical perspective, which embraces public engagement, the circulation of research results and equity, sustainability,  inclusion and well-being as key values within the practice of research. Since the PhDs are at the beginning of their scholarly career, it is important to explore positionings relating instruments and methods that the young researchers will later develop as part of their careers.  The module will provide an initial understanding of Research Methodology (including epistemological, methodological and axiological perspectives) to delve into methods and instruments (quantitative, qualitative and mixed). The practical exploration of such methods and instruments will always liaise with the methodological debate.
