‘I would like to be free, free like a man….
Like a man who needs to range himself with his imagination and who finds this space only in his democracy.
Who has the right to vote and who spends his life delegating and being commanded has found his new freedom.
Freedom is not standing on a tree, it is not even the flight of a fly… it is not even having an opinion… it is not even a gesture or an invention.
Freedom is not a free space, freedom is participation.’ (G. Gaber, ‘Freedom’, 1972)
On Thursday 22 May, Piazza Capitaniato in Padua will turn into a crossroads of knowledge and perspectives, hosting the event ‘Chiosco è Partecipazione’. A crossroads that recalls the function of the kiosk that previously inhabited space, gathering merchants, citizens, children, professors, and artisans. This third mission initiative, promoted by the University of Padua, is a true invitation to encounter: a new opportunity for the Academy to open up to the city and for the city to dialogue with it, in a process of mutual enrichment and learning.
The FISPPA Department (Philosophy, Sociology, Pedagogy and Applied Psychology) and the University invite citizens, children, students, lecturers, representatives of institutions and stakeholders to participate in an afternoon celebrating the value of engagement and active participation. The aim of the event goes beyond the mere popularization of science: it is the desire to create a space for ‘hybridisation’ and free, reciprocal dialogue between the academic community and the civil community. As Italo Calvino wrote in his “Lezioni Americane” (1988), the city is “a set of material and immaterial exchanges”: this occasion aims precisely at promoting these exchanges, in which academic knowledge mixes with the experiences and knowledge of everyday life, generating new ideas and perspectives. The engagement of citizenship, students and community actors as a whole is fundamental to build a more aware and participative society, as G. says: it is only through active participation in decisions concerning our personal and community life, comparing our ideas, sharing them and sharing those of others that we can affirm our true freedom. This is what the invitation to ‘Kiosco è Partecipazione’ is all about. It offers us the opportunity to substantiate our right-duty to be free men, to create fertile ground for collaboration and social innovation.
The program consists of various moments of knowledge, storytelling, dialogue and sharing, concluding with a moment of conviviality.
‘Chiosco è Partecipazione’ is an opportunity to experience a new way of conceiving the relationship between university and society: a single community that grows and evolves through exchange and collaboration. We look forward to seeing you there!
