The town is medieval and the campus is small. A different setting from Monteortone, but the same idea: doctoral students, faculty, and visiting scholars, and one full day on research design. At the center of this year’s edition lies a focus that is central to all participants: the role of different research designs in shaping educational inquiry. The programme treats it as a practical question: how designs get built, tested, and changed in the field.

The structure of the day reflects this orientation, moving from a keynote speech grounded in empirical work, through collaborative exploration, toward broader disciplinary reflection. The invited keynote by Prof. Steven J. Howard (University of Oxford) provides the conceptual backbone of the day. Drawing on his work in child development and education, he will walk through how research designs actually evolve — using concrete examples including the PRSIST intervention and recent co-designed language initiatives. The talk will cover co-design, stakeholder engagement, and what it takes to keep a design both rigorous and workable. The late morning moves into group work, either a reflective roundtable or a design exercise, depending on where participants are in their doctorate. The sessions are organised around the methodological questions embedded in their own projects: how to build a design that holds, how to bring in stakeholders without losing coherence, how to account for what the field will actually throw at you. Prof. Ottavia Trevisan, Prof. Steven Howard, Prof. Michelle Pieri and Prof. Matteo Cornacchia facilitate across the groups.
Each group then presents back, and Prof. Howard leads the discussion. A chance to hear how others are handling the same problems and to start seeing the shared threads.

The afternoon opens with a roundtable featuring Prof. Caterina Bembich, Prof. Paolo Sorzio, Prof. Elena Bortolotti, and Prof. Marco Ius from the University of Trieste, who take up the question of how research design lives at the junction of theory, method, and context, and what it means when these elements stop aligning neatly.

The day closes with a short synthesis of the questions that came up, less a conclusion than a way to name what’s worth carrying forward.

The PhD Day 2026 will take place from 9:30 to 15:15 at the Portogruaro Campus (Via del Seminario 34, Portogruaro).
